Being a second generation native to Las Vegas, Mariena has always been interested in the food and beverage industry, looking to the glamorous allure of the strip. You've probably seen Mariena compete in various competitions or behind the stick somewhere but these days you can find her as the mixologist and GM for the Cosmopolitan.

Her Inspiration for the Cocktail: "I wanted to take a feminine approach to this cocktail, while trying not to dominate the flavor profile of Makers 46. So the use of blueberry, gives a nice sweetness and beautiful color without overpowering the Makers 46."

About Heidi: I started my career as a bartender in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at the tender young age of 18. After moving to Las Vegas when I was 26, I discovered the art of mixology through working at the Rio Hotel and Casino. My passion has always been to create cocktails for guests that will keep them returning to my place of employment.

Her Inspiration for the Cocktail: "The inspiration for my cocktail is for my Grandmother the very first “Iron Jawed Angel “ in my family. She was sugar and spice with a powerful kick, yet was as soft in heart as a rose petal.

My Grandmother came over on the boat from Germany in 1904, wishing for a new life as many immigrants of that time did. She was raised in the "old school" way of female thought to be subservient to a man's wishes and wants.. but this was America... a new life, with new sets of rules, not under the watchful eye of the German Government. She did what was required of her, excelled in her studies, and learned everything about the land of opportunity while growing into a young woman. She loved the freedoms afforded to her and her family in this new land, but was amazed to see how women still had lesser freedoms than their male counterparts. She realized that the rules of the female in America, were not so different than those of the homeland she had left so long ago, this did not sit very well with a young woman who wanted a better life for herself, and for the life of her future children.

Being the intelligent, defiant, young woman that she was, she set out to help a movement that would forever live in the history books of the United States... Women’s Suffrage. Grandma picked up her banner, and marched for a freedom that most females of today take for granted, The Right to VOTE. Grandma found her voice at a very young age, and never again let anyone quiet her, and on January 26, 1920, the United States Government passed a bill giving Women the Right to Vote in any official election.

My grandmother taught my Mother to always stand for what she believed in, to never back down from what you feel is right and just, and to always be independent no matter what. I was taught by my mother these same sets of rules and follow them with the same passion that they did."

4th Place:
Wendy Verdel-Hodges
Venue: Fusion Mixology Bar, Las Vegas

  Cocktail: "Gilded Hooch"

1oz Makers 46
1oz Orange Curacao
1oz fresh orange juice
.
5 oz Navan
1.5 oz egg whites
3-4 drops orange bitters

Preparation:  Create a foam with egg whites and Navan by "dry" shaking hard and set aside. In a seperate mixing glass combine whiskey, curacao, and orange juice. Shake with ice and strain into 4oz rocks glass. Top with the Navan foam. Using a torch, "tan" the top of the foam. Top with orange bitters.

Garnish: fresh orange zest

About Wendy: I've been bartending for 18 years, but really found my niche since moving to Las egas 5 years ago when I discovered I could combine my passion for mixing and food. My philosophy is if you can eat it, I can put it in a cocktail!

Her Inspiration for the Cocktail: "I was feeling a bit creative at work the other day and decided to make a navan foam. After doing so I decided to use whiskey to make the cocktail to go with it. I am pregnant so I had to rely on my nose to put the flavors together instead of my tastebuds. The end result, according to my guinea pigs, was that this delectable cocktail is a real winner!"

5th Place:
Adina Artstein
Venue: Red Rock Resort, Las Vegas

Cocktail: "Maker Blush"

3/4 Sliced Asian Pears

1 tbsp. Fresh chopped ginger

1 oz. Tazo Chai Tea Concentrate

1 1/4 oz. Makers 46

1/2 oz. Belle de Brillet Pear Liqueur

Preparation: Slice asian pears and ginger, place in a pint glass and squeeze half of a lemon on top. Muddle until completely macerated. Add Makers 46, Belle de Brillet Pear liqueur and Tazo Chai Tea to the pint glass. Fill boston shaker with ice and shake. Roll contents into a sesame oil and sugar rimmed Collins glass. Garnish with fresh basil leaf and asian pear slice and enjoy.

Garnish: Sesame oil- sugar rim. Pear and Basil leaf float

About Adina: I have been bartending for 4 years. Three of the four years I have been exercising fresh fruit mixology. I am a whiskey drinker by heart. I love Makers Mark and enjoy working with the product. I was featured this past summer on the cover of Las Vegas Seven magazine, as "the one to watch" of the Las Vegas Ladies of Mixology. I have been a member of the United States Bartender's Guild since 2008. My birthday is September 9th and I will be 25 years old on the day of the competition.

Her Inspiration for the Cocktail: "My inspiration for the "Maker Blush," stemmed from my love for Asian food. Growing up with a Japanese mother I was introduced to a broad range of spices and tastes. Though, Thai food is my ultimate favorite option in dining out. Ginger, basil and sesame is my way of bringing an Asian flair to this cocktail. The Asian pears sweeten up the cocktail while giving it a thick consistency from the mash. The Chai Tea breaks up the Maker's 46 just enough to bring out the vanilla aromas. The pear liqueur identifies with the Asian pears and bumps up the flavor just a bit while giving the pears free range throughout the cocktail. This is a savory cocktail that you can snack on and enjoy."
